How much does it cost to charge an electric car?

Electric vehicles are the most recent bet of many European countries to reach the required CO₂ levels. In the months elapsed in 2022, at least 19,098 electric cars have been registered in Spain. According to the ANFAC association, electrified vehicles increased their deliveries by 17.6% in the month, to 6,859 units.

Likewise, a Moves III plan has been implemented to increase the number of recharging points for sustainable vehicles, with the aim of encouraging the purchase of these cars.

Due to the promotion, state subsidies and the variety of models available, more and more people are interested in information and purchase of an electric car. Among the information of interest, many users seek to know where to make an electric charge. For this, there is SpotiCharge, a company located in Valencia that provides a project management engineering service for electric car charging.

How much does it cost to recharge an electric car?

When electric cars are charged at home, they are more affordable to maintain than gasoline cars. In this sense, the savings from recharging can even pay back the initial investment costs in the long run.                  In addition, electric motors are up to 4 times more efficient than combustion engines.

Currently, the price of gasoline is around € 1.53 per liter, while its equivalent in electric recharge is € 0.3 / KW. In context, a trip of 100 km has an approximate cost with a consumption of 8 liters per 100 km of € 12.25 for gasoline cars and 15,000 W per 100 km in its electric equivalent, which is equivalent to 15kW * 0.3 = € 4.5 for those that run on electricity.

Companies such as SpotiCharge are responsible for the management of projects installation of charging points for electric cars and for this type of vehicle. They have a specialized team that has the purpose of helping their customers obtain the benefits that sustainable energy provides.

What are the steps of a public point installation project?

It is necessary to greatly expand the network of available electric car charging points to reach a good distribution throughout the territory, in the same way as the 11,602 gas stations in Spain. A typical project of installing a charging station contains the following concepts:

  • Design of the electrical and civil works project.
  • Management of the service with the SpotiCharge brand or another brand.
  • Selection of the best rate 2.1 between for a power of 10 and 15kW or 3.0 if it is greater than 15kW.
  • Definition of the sale price to the customer in kWh according to time and day.
  • Management of the electrical connection. Installation, testing and validation of the project by a certified body (OCA).
  • Management of Moves III aid for infrastructures according to the recommendations of the IDAE.

What advantages are obtained by performing an electric recharge compared to refilling gasoline?

Electric vehicles are up to 3 times more efficient than conventional gasoline vehicles, batteries convert up to 62% of the vehicle's moving energy, while gasoline vehicles only convert up to 22% of their energy into motion. This represents a lower energy expenditure and, therefore, also an economic saving.

In this sense, according to the United States Department of Energy, up to 50% savings can be generated compared to gasoline-based alternatives. Another important advantage of recharging electric cars is that the charging points can be installed in the homes or businesses of the owners, and be shared so that the installation has a better profitability.

The reduction of fuel use, which is one of the most important sources of pollution in all of Spain, which is measured in g CO2/km is the last benefit of having an electric recharge. Due to the multiple positive qualities, the growth of these vehicles is forecast to remain on the rise.
